dearest friends and readers,

in the chaos of my recent schedule, I somehow managed to forget the second anniversary of my beloved, the 14th. when I began this project two years ago, going on my blog was like looking at a blank map everyday and dreaming up the roads and routes and paths and trails that would run across it in beautiful striations...

on these virtual pages, I built highways and bridges and found road signs and directions to the corners of my mind and the recesses of my imagination, and I began to pursue a dream. it is hard to fathom the leaps and bounds that have been made in two short and swift cycles of the seasons, and here we are: back in autumn again, a season of change.

and change is good, friends. change is very good. right now I am working on so many different and exciting projects, and the 14th has been quiet, but ever-present, alongside these endeavours. as my energy flows into new and open doorways, through cracks and keyholes, I have come to realize it is time for this blog to take a rest and sit under a willow tree and navel-gaze for a while.

our time together here has meant the world to me, and no words of thanks shall ever suffice in expressing my appreciation for all of the support I have so lovingly received.

the 14th will always be a passion project of mine, and has a new life awaiting it in the next chapter. in the meantime, don't be a stranger. noahgano.com will be up and running on October 1st, and will be the future hub of comings and goings, so do stay posted!

"My first Molecule Man sculptures were made in 1977 and 1978 in Los Angeles. Early molecule structures included a molecule chair, a ceramic molecule vase, a molecule figure and a model for a molecule building made from styrofoam balls. Originally, I was fascinated by this molecule idea because of the simple fact that even though we appear to be quite solid, we are in fact composed of a molecule structure which, in itself is mostly composed of water and air.

For me, this hundred-foot tall aluminum sculpture composed of three figures meeting in the center, not only refers to the lightness inside our own solid bodies, but also the figures joining in the center, refer to the molecules of all human beings coming together to create our existence. This symbolism is especially poignant for this 100-foot Molecule Man on the Spree River in Berlin since the river marked the division between East and West Berlin."

Friends, it is no word of a lie that there was a lot of wine in October. A LOT. Having had the privilege to attend a few "underground" wine tastings, I tried more than 60 wines over two evenings that I have never seen before... and many I probably never will again. This was nothing in comparison to the grand honour of being a judge in the Royal Winter Fair wine competition; bright and early on a Sunday morning, I began the testing of around 85 contending wines in no less than 5 categories.

the 14th is officially celebrating its first anniversary! It has been an incredible journey that I have relived this morning in its entirety, all of the peaks and valleys, the waterfalls and the droughts, the moments of true beauty and inspiration... and one thing has been true all along: since the day this blog was born, I have had nothing but the purest of intentions. What I give to you is from my heart and soul, and through this has come incredible discovery, adventure, and deep satisfaction. A path has been indelibly carved.

How can a 'thank you' be adequate gratitude for the divine, intangible gifts that have been bestowed upon me? It cannot be. So I shall give more, more than ever, and cast an ever-wider gaze at the horizons... truly the journey has just begun. And I thank you--from the bottom of my heart.

In the kind of evening where the breeze hails Spring, I walked along a mostly empty sidewalk in the 18th district of Vienna, hearing only the click of my Italian leather-soled shoes as they crushed pebbles beneath them, faint sounds of children's laughter echoing in a not-too-distant park. With every step, thoughts streamed through my mind like an old 35mm film reel, crackling and unsteady, accompanied by a drumbeat of reality. Hemingway advises to simply start with the one sentence you know to be true, and I was certain the soft warmth in the cool wind was the truest thing I knew.

This is an antique purse mirror, circa 1900. Originally silver-plated and lovingly rubbed away over the years, the front side features a photograph of Central Park in New York City over one hundred years ago, when the trees hadn't yet eclipsed parts of the skyline surrounding the park. It was more common to see compacts with mirrors and powder enclosed in this period, as opposed to a simple two-sided mirror which became much more popular in the 1920's.

This is a treasure I bought as a gift from one of my favourite stores in Toronto--stay posted for a full article on this incredible hidden gem!

If you haven't heard your name called over a sound system since your bar mitzvah or the last time one of your friends hijacked a DJ booth (which, depending on your friends*, may be rarely or weekly), I highly suggest you find occasion. Granted, in public speaking I've been called to and spoken from the microphone more than a few times, but entering a room under the veil of anonymity and emerging centre stage is a horse of a completely different colour. And my microphone would be my paint brush. I think my reaction of shock was clear when, ten minutes after arriving late to Art Battle Six, I heard my name--in mid-sip of a fresh beer--being randomly drawn from a hat to paint in the second four-artist battle. I was not expecting this. Having pulled myself out of my sick-bed and sweatpants, I had only bargained on being inspired and finding new moments with my camera, having so thoroughly enjoyed Battle 5; yet I had a feeling this was going to happen. It seems the fates conspired for me to experience Art Battle facing the canvas, instead of behind the lens...

The selection process (I was the second of four) happened entirely in slow motion, "Noooooaaaaaaahhhhhh Gaaaaaaaaaaaanoooooooooooo," and it seemed every word and movement was drawn out as the sound of my heart steadily drowned out the crowd around me. And then it began. The next twenty minutes were among the fastest minutes of my life; from the audience, the time frame is palpable, but from the canvas no more than a blink. A photograph I had recently taken in New York flashed in my mind and I dipped into the blue, and stared down a long hallway in my imagination. All I could see and all I could hear was the sight and sound of the brush sliding along the canvas, and the somewhat dramatic (and apropos) electro music. I remember hearing there were thirteen minutes, I remember hearing there were five, and then it was over. I stood back and took a long, parched gulp of my now-warm beer. I laughed. I smiled ear to ear.

Nothing seemed to matter in the adrenaline-fuelled moments following the battle, not the voting process (I knew mine wasn't quite the winner), nor the silent auction. It was a rush to watch the last battle and the live-model special round from the audience, now a spectator who moments ago had been under the same spotlights, circled by a crowd, brush in hand. I decided to check up on my painting late in the evening at the silent auction, and to my surprise--I had pretty much resigned it to public destruction for failure to be sold--a stranger, already paid and gone, had decided to give it a home. Thank you kind stranger!** The team behind Art Battle is phenomenal, truly a group of individuals with a passion for art and community. If you, like so many, are looking for something different to do in Toronto, follow these Battles.

This art is collective, subjective, and addictive.

Walking through Amsterdam, my friend stopped a man on a bicycle and asked him for a restaurant recommendation. He pointed us in a general direction, certain we'd find something; we strolled around and examined our options, urged forward as if something was waiting. My Cup Runneth Over

As would be evident from the title (and content) of this post, my cup runneth over. When you are in the midst of an adventure, the need to be present in every moment demands that you move forward everyday--no matter how dear the memory--for the infinite possibilities that await, but the need to retain that memory endears. Now back at the 14th HQ, I have the luxury of dwelling on and revelling in every moment, and believe me I have been. But, despite the lack of a train, plane, bus, or bicycle waiting to whisk me way, it is time to keep moving.

After a six hour delay at Toronto's Pearson International, I arrived in New York City before midnight struck on March 5th. On March 9th I left New York, with all the lights on in my heart and my eyes open wide, with my travelling companion, dear friend, and partner in crime on a plane bound for Amsterdam... with thoughts of the most incredible faces I was blessed to meet in the warmest-coldest-biggest-littlest city of New York.
